The Perfect Hawaiian Sunrise
My and my boyfriend Carl had decided to "become an item" on August 23rd 2002. After a few years, we agreed that if we were together for 10 years, we would celebrate by going to Hawaii!
That 10 years crept up fast and before we knew it we were relaxing on the beautiful island of Kauai celebrating our 10 years together.
Now, this might sound like a proposal was obviously looming, however for many years now Carl had made his views on marriage very clear and we were both happy knowing that we weren't going to get married. All through the holiday in Hawaii, people were questioning us about why we weren't married after such a long time, and I was the one to jump straight in and defend our relationship and our reasons. So I must make it so clear: This was a complete surprise!
The night before our anniversary day, some people we met at the pool suggested we wake up early and watch the sunrise on the beach. I thought this was such a lovely idea, however Carl wasn't so sure about getting up at silly o'clock!
I woke the next morning to a very excited Carl waking me up to see the sunrise. I was feeling really tired and just rolled back over, but eventually the excitement took over and I rushed out of bed. Carl grabbed his camera and off we went.
As we arrived at the beach, we were overwhelmed by excitement, realizing the sun was going to rise right in the middle of the sea...the perfect sunrise! Suddenly, Carl said he really needed to go to the toilet. I asked him to leave his camera so I could catch the sunrise, but he ran off and said he really had to go! I anxiously waited for him to return in hope we didn't miss the first glimpse of the sunrise. He returned just in time to see the first rays begin to peak over the horizon. It was just stunning. Carl was taking lots of photos, and out of the corner of my eye, I realized that he was on one knee. Initially I thought he was just getting a good photo, however it suddenly hit me that he was holding a tiny box in his hands. I turned to face him, tears immediately welling up and my heart pounding and mumbled "Are you sure? Are you serious"! He said "Well, will you marry me??"! I practically sobbed out a resounding yes and he put the most beautiful engagement ring on my shaky finger. He scooped me up in his arms and we hugged whilst I cried and cried with happiness! I just couldn't believe it! We were getting married! I had hardly imagined this moment, knowing Carl didn't like the idea of marriage, and yet here I was experiencing the most perfect proposal! It didn't hit me till later, as we were relaxing by the pool and discussing wedding ideas, just how perfect it was. He proposed to me, on our 10 year anniversary, on a beautiful beach at the most glorious sunrise in Hawaii. I don't think it could have been any more perfect. xx
