Where to Propose in Barcelona
Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia, and the second largest city in Spain, with an enviable location right on the Mediterranean Sea. When you combine the energy and vibrancy of the city with the depth of its history and culture, you have the perfect location for a romantic proposal vacation. You could choose to propose from a vantage point with a view over Barcelona, at one of the architectural gems around the city, or simply whilst strolling through one of Barcelona’s many beautiful squares.
Proposing with a View of Barcelona
For one of the best views of Barcelona, Montjuic, a hill to the southwest of the city, is hard to beat. The eastern side of the hill overlooks the city harbor and the flat top is home to the impressive Castell de Montjuïc. During summer evenings the grounds of the castle become an open air cinema with original films broadcast on large screens while visitors picnic or perhaps propose beneath.
Another romantic spot on Montjuic would be the magic fountains near the Plaça d'Espanya which are set to music and lights each evening in the summer. You can reach the top of Montjuic by cable car which is a romantic ride itself.
The other option for a fabulous view of Barcelona is Tibidabo, the highest mountain in the Serra de Collserola, which provides an amazing view of Barcelona and the surrounding coast. You can take a funicular train to the top where you’ll find an old fashioned amusement park with many rides dating back to the beginning of the 20th century. There is also an old Gothic church with a beautiful terrace which would be an ideal proposal location.
Proposing at a Gaudi Icon
One of the most striking features of Barcelona is its famous Gaudi architecture, a very distinctive style that the city is immensely proud of. Proposing at an iconic Gaudi location would be very fitting in this city and there are a couple of possibilities. The Sagrada Familia is Gaudi’s most famous work and the unfinished cathedral has become the symbol of Barcelona. You can ascend the famous towers by lift, which might be a possible proposal location, but do be aware that these towers can get quite busy.
Another wonderful choice for a Gaudi themed proposal is Park Guell, a park at the top of the city designed for Barcelona aristocracy. It is home to some fabulous buildings and structures, and the colorful mosaic terrace at the top offers a lovely view over the city and the ideal place to pop the question.
Proposing in Barcelona City
Barcelona is a city with plenty of character, and you can often find a wonderful spot to propose when you are simply wandering about its streets and squares. One of the better known squares in Barcelona is Placa de Catedral, home to La Seu Cathedral, which is located in the center of the Gothic quarter. It is beautifully lit at night and there are plenty of restaurants in the area as well as street entertainment to add to the atmosphere.
Another lovely square in the Gothic quarter is the Placa Sant Felip Neri, which is peaceful as well as beautiful and romantic with its tiny chapel, fountain, and trees. The sad history of the square, which saw its fair share of grief during the civil war, only adds to the poignancy of the area.
Other areas of Barcelona are worth exploring and may provide the perfect location for you to get down on one knee. In the fashionable El Born district, with its boutiques, cafes, and medieval streets, you’ll find the Placa Sata Maria del Mar, home to the intriguing church of the same name. Over in the Poblemou district, the Placa Prim is almost rustic in its appearance, with little white houses and orange trees, as well as some of the best sea food in town.
