Mount Katahdin and the Knife Edge Trail. Mt. The AT may not be the oldest trail in the US, but it ranks among the longest hiking trails in America. Only about a half mile in is a great view over a pond of the Mount Katahdin massif. From there, head up to Russell Pond on the Russell Pond Trail.
The Hunt trail - basically the same trail as the AT. I've section-hiked the AT, but this year I finally have the opportunity to thruhike. That goes without saying. The Abol Trail, the most direct route to Katahdin’s Baxter Peak from a roadside trailhead, is often presumed the “best bet” by novice hikers.That’s a losing bet. In July, I had a great trip to scope out different parts of the AT and was able to get in a couple hikes along the way.

In 2005, the Appalachian Trail Conference became the Appalachian Trail Conservancy. I took the trail only 1.1 miles to see what I was going to experience the next day if I climbed Mount Katahdin.
We limit access to Katahdin to protect natural resources and a wilderness experience. Parked at Katahdin Steam > up Hunt Trail > over Knife Edge > down Helon Taylor > Hired a driver out of Millinocket to drive us from Roaring Brook parking back to Katahdin Stream Four of us did this trail last month, and all of us concurred that it was the hardest hike any of us had ever done.
