My Engagement
Friday September 4 2009
It was a normal September day. My fiancé’, Tony, was at work. I called him at 12:30 pm, as I usually do, however he did not pick up the phone. Instead, his brother (Enzo) picked up, and told me that he was upstairs (Home), and told me to hold on for a minute. After being on hold for 5 minutes, I decided to hang up. Because my fiancé’s family tends to break balls I thought, maybe Enzo said it to joke with me. I called the house after hanging up and Bina (My future mother-in-law) picked up. I told her what had just happened and she began to explain that Tony was at work and his brother was not home. I believed her story however, it all did seem odd. So I attempted to call my fiancé again. Finally, after about five tries he answered. I began to tell him the story and he stated that his brother had visited him at work and was joking with me; he also reminds me that I am scheduled to come to work at 6pm after school. He mentioned that to assure me that he was not home.
At around 4:30pm I had just finished with a client at school when my teacher, Ms. Carol came to me and told me I had a visitor. I was excited because I thought it was another client that requested me personally. As she accompanied me toward the front of the clinic floor, she told me to close my eyes. I found that strange and said no. She kept insisting, “CLOSE YOUR EYES!” I kept replying NO. As I got closer to the entrance near the center of the clinic floor, I saw Tony coming toward me with flowers. I was confused. “What are you doing here?” I asked. “What do you think I’m doing here” he replied, as he dropped to one knee and pulled out a ring box. He put the ring on my finger and asked me to marry him. “YES Of course!” I said excitedly. My school went crazy with excitement. Everyone started cheering and taking pictures. It was an amazing and beautiful feeling!
As we left my school, I asked tony if we are still scheduled to work today. “No” he replied and he began telling me that he was going to bbq for us and we needed to stop at the local butcher shop to pick up shish kebab. The butcher shop was busy. As we were waiting, I told tony that we should throw an engagement party next week with both our families. He agrees. He allowed a few people to cut in front of us on line at the butcher store. I was losing my patience because I had to go to the bathroom (and I was so happy that I was engaged I didn’t want to be in a butcher store right then. How romantic is that?). After 20 minutes, we finally get our shish kebab and head home. I ask him if there were more surprises for me? He replied “No”; you already got your big surprise. What can be bigger than that?” It took us five more minutes to get home. As we pull up in front of his house, I see my uncle David in his driveway. I jumped out the car and ran towards him to give him a hug. As I reached him I saw, to my right, my family and Tony’s family. “Omg” there were balloons; banners saying congratulations and happy engagement, and a long table filled with flowers, food, and loved ones. Everything was planned out. I guess I did not have to plan our engagement party after all. This also explained all the strange behavior that day. This day was the best day of my life and I will never forget it!
