The summit of Haleakalā is 10,000 feet above sea level, and the sunrise there is one of the better arguments for getting up at 3am that exists. After that, the day drops to the west side: warm, clear, the Pacific visible from most of the road. Kaanapali turns golden at dusk, and if you’re on the water, the light at that hour takes care of everything else.
Maui gives you more range in a single day than most islands give you in a week. Sunrise on the volcano, beach in the afternoon, dinner in Kaanapali. Most couples choose one moment for the proposal. But the island is small enough that you could, if you wanted to, build the entire day around the ask.
Maui Proposal Ideas
Hawaii’s second largest island is often described as a sun-drenched pacific paradise, so it’s no wonder that many couples find it the ideal place for a romantic proposal. With fabulous scenery, idyllic weather, wonderful food, and a calmer more relaxed atmosphere than busier islands such as Oahu, there are plenty of places to propose in Maui whatever time of day you choose. Most visitors head to either West Maui or South Maui for the best locations.

The views from the top are breathtaking, but do be aware that it takes two hours to drive to the top from the coast so you need to plan ahead if you want to be there for the sunrise, which is known as one of the best in the world. The park now requires a sunrise reservation for each vehicle, booked ahead on recreation.gov, so sort that out before you go. Pack proper layers, because before dawn the summit is regularly wet, windy and below freezing, and a girlfriend shivering in a sundress is not the picture you had in mind. You won't have the rim to yourselves either, because sunrise draws a crowd, and on some mornings the cloud comes right up over the summit and you see nothing at all. Walk a little way from the main viewpoint, and decide beforehand whether you'll still ask if the sun doesn't come through. Legend has it that the Hawaiian god Maui waited in the volcano’s crater to capture the sun and make it move more slowly through the sky.
Hana is another good place to watch the sunrise, especially if you drive or walk up to Fagan’s Cross which is a hill behind Hana with a fantastic view over the town and the Pacific Coast. This is a great option if you’re staying in Hana, but be aware that it can be dangerous to drive the Hana Highway in the dark if you’re coming from West Maui.
Daytime Proposals in Maui

Ideal beaches in South Maui include Sugar Beach and Kamaole II Beach, while in West Maui Napili Bay is a wonderful choice.
Every beach in Hawaii is public, so don't count on having one to yourselves. Sugar Beach runs for miles along the road between Kihei and Maalaea, and on a beach that long you can keep walking until the people thin out. Kamaole II is a county park with lifeguards and a car park, which makes it a good place to swim and a busy place to kneel. Mornings are quieter than afternoons, and a morning proposal leaves you the rest of the day to celebrate. If you've booked a photographer, ask how they plan to stay out of sight. The ones who do this often will turn up looking like any other beachgoer, towel and all.
Another possibility for a daytime proposal would be to take the fantastic drive along Hana Highway, which takes around two hours from Kahului to Hana. It follows the East coast of Maui winding around mountains and passing black sandy beaches, and there are numerous scenic spots where you can stop to take in the view and enjoy one of the many waterfalls, as well as asking that all important question.
Kaanapali in West Maui is ideal for a more public proposal. You can spend the day browsing the open-air shops at Whalers Village and walking the beachfront boardwalk that runs the length of Kaanapali Beach before you get down on one knee. Celebrate afterwards with a Mai Tai at one of the oceanfront bars along the beach.

One of the best options is to take a sunset cruise out from Kaanapali Beach and make sure you let the crew know you’re planning to propose so they can arrange a little privacy for you. If you’d rather not take a cruise, the sunset is also beautiful from the sand at Kaanapali.
There are plenty of beaches that are perfect for a sunset proposal, and in South Maui one of the best is Makena Beach. Wailea Beach is also a good choice ideally located between west and south Maui. Kapalua Beach is a good choice in West Maui, or you could consider Kaanapali which never fails for romance. If you choose Kaanapali you can snorkel around the coral at Black Rock during the day, pop the question as the sun sets, and then take a romantic stroll north along the beach from the Hyatt Regency to the Sheraton Maui, enjoying the lit tiki torches and the pounding surf.
Black Rock has its own sunset ritual. Most evenings, just before the sun goes down, torches are lit along the point and a diver jumps from the rock into the sea in honor of Chief Kahekili, and people gather on the sand below to watch. That's worth knowing if that's where you were planning to kneel. I'd suggest watching the dive together first and proposing once everyone has drifted off to dinner.
Romantic Restaurants in Maui
Hawaiian food is a colorful mix of cultures and influences, combining American, Chinese, Filipino, Japanese, Korean, Polynesian, and Portuguese cuisine to form an eclectic mix. While there are plenty of superb Hawaiian restaurants on Maui, you can also find wonderful restaurants serving continental, American, and Asian food.
Restaurants in Kapalua and Napili
Merriman’s in Kapalua sits on a point of land right above the water, and the tables look straight out at the sunset. Chef Peter Merriman built the menu around local farms and day-boat fish, so most of what you order was grown or caught on the island. Book close to sunset and ask for a table by the rail.
Sea House at the Napili Kai Beach Resort puts you about as close to the water as a table gets, right on Napili Bay, and the kitchen leans on local fish and island produce.
The Banyan Tree at The Ritz-Carlton Maui, Kapalua is the dressier choice up this end of the coast. The room opens onto the ocean. If you're proposing at dinner, tell them when you book, not when you sit down.
Restaurants in Kaanapali
Leilani’s On The Beach is a seafood restaurant in Whaler’s Village that serves only seasonal fish according to Hawaiian traditions. As well as the formal dining room there is a more casual beach side grill with views out towards Molokai and Lanai.
Umalu is a full service dining restaurant with a casual feel, located alongside the pool at the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort Hotel on Kaanapali Beach. It serves contemporary Hawaiian cuisine and has a fabulous view over the ocean.
Son’z Steakhouse is the more formal dining option at the Hyatt Regency, set beside the swans and waterfalls of Swan Court. The menu is prime steaks and island seafood, and the room keeps the warm colors and easy atmosphere the resort is known for.
Restaurants in Wailea
Ko is located at the Fairmont Kea Lani in Wailea and offers superb dishes inspired by the sugarcane plantation era. It combines Hawaiian, Chinese, Filipino, Portuguese, Korean, and Japanese influences with a decidedly contemporary twist.
Hali’imaile General Store is located in Hali’imaile some distance from Wailea, but it’s worth a visit as one of Maui’s most iconic restaurants. A multiple award winner, this restaurant is located among the pineapple fields of upcountry Maui and features a unique menu of Hawaiian Regional Cuisine.
Romantic Activities in Maui
While it’s very easy to spend time in Maui simply enjoying the beaches, the food, and the fabulous views, you may want to plan a few additional activities to keep the romantic theme going throughout your stay and to make the best of your trip to Maui.
- Take a whale watching trip from Maalaea Harbor between November and May, when the humpbacks are here (January to March is the busiest stretch)
- Have dinner and enjoy the dancing at a sunset Luau
- Plan a snorkeling expedition to meet Maui’s unique sea creatures

Where to Stay in Maui for Your Proposal Trip
Many couples choose to stay in the Wailea Beach area of Maui. It's on the dry, sunny south shore, close to the airport and the road up Haleakala, and West Maui is an easy drive away, so you have access to all the attractions that Maui has to offer. If you really want to splash out on accommodation, the Four Seasons Resort at Wailea Beach has stunning views and luxurious suites as well as a spa and serenity pool, and the Grand Wailea Hotel has truly stunning rooms located in the Napua Tower. Where to Stay in West Maui
For those considering a proposal in West Maui, Napili Bay is a wonderful place to stay, and The Mauian on Napili Bay is a great choice. It is a small boutique hotel, known for combining nostalgic 1950s tropics architecture with contemporary designer touches to provide a hotel with real charm and character. Kaanapali came through the 2023 fire largely unaffected and its resorts run as normal. The Outrigger Kaanapali Beach Resort, the old Kaanapali Beach Hotel, prides itself on introducing Hawaiian culture and activities to its guests.
If you’d like to stay in Lahaina itself, the Lahaina Shores Beach Resort is open again. It came through the 2023 wildfire and was one of the first places in town to take guests back. It sits at the quiet south end of Front Street and has the only beachfront condos in Lahaina. The units are studios and one-bedrooms with kitchenettes and lanais looking across the water to Lanai and Molokai. Much of Front Street is still being rebuilt. For now this is a base for the beach rather than a walk into town, but staying here brings a little business back to Lahaina while it recovers.
Where to Stay in South Maui
Couples staying in south Maui tend to look to Wailea and Makena, and the Andaz Maui at Wailea makes a calm, luxurious base for your proposal vacation. It sits right on Mokapu Beach at the northern end of Wailea, and between the beach and the spa you will leave rejuvenated. If you like to play golf, there are two championship courses a few minutes up the road.
Although the west and south of Maui are the most popular locations to stay, the north and east of the island are certainly worth a look. Couples staying in the north might consider the vibrant town of Paia, where the Paia Inn Hotel will provide a warm welcome.
