Pictures of this galaxy and have revealed the first ever image of an actual black hole.

Quick guide What are black holes?

This NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope time-lapse movie captures the movement of the jet over a timespan of 13 years. Messier 87 is part of the Bethulah (Virgo) galaxy cluster, which is about 55 million light-years away from earth. A black hole the mass of the sun would have an event horizon a mere 6 kilometers across. A supermassive black hole ejects the jet at nearly the speed of light. The following photo of it was taken with the Event Horizon Telescope. Compare that to the 1.4-million-kilometer breadth of the sun itself.

Messier 87 (M87) is a bright elliptical galaxy, which is home to a massive black hole. We zoom into the giant elliptical galaxy Messier 87, which lies near the centre of the Virgo cluster of galaxies. A high-speed jet of hot plasma is buried deep inside the galaxy. The incredible black hole in the galaxy Messier 87 was named Powehi in recognition of the contribution made by two Hawaiian telescopes. The supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way, dubbed Sagittarius A*, is 4 million times the mass of the sun but only about 17 times wider. The picture shows a halo of dust and gas, tracing the outline of a colossal black hole, at the heart of the Messier 87 galaxy, 55m light years from Earth.
