What Is the Purpose of the Church?
Once we understand the Biblical purpose and reason for local churches, we will understand the necessity for the local church.
The Bible teaches a plurality of elders, as seen in James 5:14; Titus 1:5; 1 Peter 5:1; and Acts 20:17. The Bible reveals additional aspects of the purpose of the church that are worth viewing: To guard the proper teachings of the church, 2 Tim. The preaching of the Word must be the centerpiece of our worship of Almighty God.
The word "church" is mentioned more than 100 times in the New Testament. God’s people gather in a variety of places and settings — and yet they gather for the same grand purpose.
The local church is for the glory of God. It is translated from the Greek term ekklesia which is formed from two Greek words meaning "an assembly" and "to call out" or "the called out ones."
